 Starting this February, and continuing up through our big festival this summer, we're offering you a monthly showcase of new, independent films.
Even with BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN topping the Oscar nominations, not every worthy LGBT themed film will get shown in Kansas City.
Our goal is to offer you the opportunity to see deserving movies, at an affordable price, with a knowledgeable and supportive audience.
ABOUT THIS MONTH'S FILM:
LOGGERHEADS is a brilliantly acted, deeply absorbing story about a young gay man (Kip Pardue) who comes to a North Carolina beach town to save its endangered Loggerhead turtles and winds up saving himself -- for a time.
Filled with magnificent performances from Tess Harper, Bonnie Hunt, Michael Learned and Chris Sarandon, this touching and savory ensemble drama is a moving, meditative exploration of love and family, told through three interconnected tales.
 LOGGERHEADS -- like 2005's other thoughtful ensemble films like CRASH, HEIGHTS, CAPOTE, et al -- provides a bighearted portrayal of realistic characters facing very real problems. Initially, the film was frequently promoted with Kip Pardue shirtless (shown at left) now, it centers on the awards and reviews the film has deservedly earned. Join us at this one-night only showing.

TRANSAMERICA Comes to Kansas City
Felicity Huffman's compelling performance should be on your must-see list. She stars as a middle class conservative Christian who is also a pre-operative transsexual. She travels across country and meets up with a brooding street hustler who dreams of being a porn star. TRANSAMERICA is now showing in Kansas City at the Cinemark on the Plaza. (BTW, It might show at other local theaters starting this weekend, now that Huffman has been nominated for an Oscar.)
BEST OF THE BROKEBACK Parodies
Thanks to those of you who sent along the many BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN parodies circling the internet and airwaves. My new personal favorite is the Tom Cruise/Top Gun film trailer. If you haven't seen the clip, click the link now before it mysteriously disappears....like the Katie Holmes lovemaking scene did at Sundance!
LGBT films flourish at 2006 Sundance Film Festival
Of the 200 films screened at this year's SUNDANCE festival, gay films and filmmakers were well-represented. More than 30 feature and short films had gay or lesbian themes, including films like "Kinky Boots," "The Night Listener," "This Film Is Not Yet Rated," "Small Town Gay Bar" and "All Aboard! Rosie's Family Cruise."
More and more LGBT stories and voices are finding their way to film and video, and the dialogue and awareness generated by them continues to progressively change the culture.
And that's a very good thing...
