Red Dirt

Directed by Tag Purvis

(1999)

Told within the confines of a rural Mississippi town, Red Dirt offers the story of a young man's search to belong in this sublime expression of love and reconciliation. At only 20, Griffith (Dan Montgomery) struggles with the responsibility of caring for his agoraphobic Aunt Summer (Karen Black) who has raised him since the accidental death of his parents. Griffith is tied to a crippling environment of repressed emotions and dark family secrets. The arrival of a charming new tenant, Lee (Walton Goggins), gives Giffith a refuge, and a tight bond that grows between the two young men. This bond engenders jealousy from Griffith's cousin Emily with whom he has maintained an unhealthy codependent relationship since childhood. Griffith's carefully constructed walls of shame and silence begin to come down and his life takes an unexpected turn. With a look and feel of a Tennessee Williams classic Karen Black delivers an incredible performance.
