NOTORIOUS C.H.O
Friday, June 21 " 7:00pm
What a way to kick off this year's festival! We are very excited to be able to welcome Margaret Cho for this special sneak preview of her new concert film,
Notorious C.H.O, the follow-up to the box office record-breaking I'm the One That I Want. Director Lorene Machado's film captures Margaret Cho at her unbridled, uncensored, and unapologetic best while on her latest North American tour.

Taking inspiration from the strong and sexy women of rap music, Notorious C.H.O. celebrates female power as Margaret addresses such diverse topics as colonics, looking for the elusive G spot, visiting sex clubs for straight people, preferring bulldykes, renting porno films, and contracting "beaver fever" (trust us, all will be explained!). A vigilant champion of racial, sexual, and gender equality, Margaret of course allots equal time to skewering gay and straight men too, musing about what would happen if men had periods, remembering her high school drag queen buddies, and discussing her ex-boyfriends' sexual habits. Plus, meet Margaret's infamous mom and dad, as they respond to being part of their daughter's hilarious routines.

Notorious C.H.O. is, without a doubt, the funniest opening night film the KCGay Film Fest has ever presented.

BORSTAL BOY
Saturday, June 22 " 4:30pm
Sunday, June 23 " 9:15pm

Sexual awakening and confusion are at the forefront of this excellent feature debut inspired by Brendan Behans wartime memoir of the same name. 16-year old Irish Republican Behan (US teen star Shawn Hatosy) embarks on a bombing assignment to mainland Britain. Apprehended by the police the teenager soon finds himself locked up in Borstal. Behans time there is not as harsh as he initially fears, due largely to the liberal attitude of the Warden (the infamous Michael York), whose aim is to reform not punish. The all-male environment serves up plenty of testosterone-charged emotions and Behan finds his feelings are torn between Charlie, an out gay sailor, and the artist daughter of the Warden. Borstal Boy beautifully captures the inner turmoil that Behan struggles to overcome, as his emotions and convictions make a play to shake his inner resolve and, ultimately, to shape the man he is to become.

THE COCKETTES
Saturday, June 22 " 7:00pm
Sunday, June 23 " 2:00pm

On New Year's Eve, 1969, a flamboyant ragtag troupe of genderbending hippies took the stage of San Francisco's Palace Theater and The Cockettes were born. For the next 2 1/2 years, these outrageous drag performers created 20 shows with titles like "A Crab on Uranus Means You're Loved" and "Tinsel Tarts in a Hot Coma," and were featured in four underground films. But when the Cockettes flew to New York City to appear Off Broadway...well, youll just have to see what happened when New Yorkers took a look at them. If KC's wonderfully-popular LATE NIGHT THEATRE ever traced their theatrical tradition's origins...they might just find these well-dyed roots. Documentarians Weissman and Weber have expertly crafted a record of a wondrous time and a wild group in The Cockettes, and you won't want to miss a minute of it.)

ELVIRA'S HAUNTED HILLS
Saturday, June 22 " 9:30pm

This is one film you MUST see on the big screen! It's ROCKY HORROR meets YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN with a splash of MOULIN ROUGE and a pinch of PEE WEE'S PLAYHOUSE!! (How's that for a cinematic concoction!!!) Kansas native, Cassandra Peterson is back as Elvira. And, we have her in all her voluptuous glory in one of the campiest films EVER MADE! This gothic horror comedy musical (!), set in 1851 Carpathia, also parodies the classic Vincent Price/Edgar Allen Poe films of the early `60s, with a healthy dash of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. On their way to Paris to perform in the Parisian Revue "Yes I Can Can," Elvira and her suffering maid, ZouZou, end up instead in the clutches of Lord Vladimere Hellsubus (Rocky Horrors Richard O'Brien). Can Elvira escape? And more importantly, will she get it on with the dark and handsome stable master?

STRAY DOGS
Sunday, June 23 " 4:15pm
Monday, June 24 " 7:45pm

Catherine Crouch's moving and thought-provoking STRAY DOGS will replace LIANNA in this year's festival. In STRAY DOGS, A sultry pregnant woman (Guinevere Turner of "Go Fish"), fed up with her hotheaded husband (Bill Sage), bonds with her burly sister-in-law (Dot-Marie Jones). Adapted from Julie Jensen's award-winning play, Crouch's shows considerable craft and sensitivity by changing the original play script where the wife falls for a "brother"-in-law. By changing that to the sister in law, the film's lesbian twist subtly alters the psychodynamics and provides a new angle on this southern-gothic tale. The dates and showtimes remain the same. We hope to bring you LIANNA at another date later in the year

In Stray Dogs, director Catherine Crouch's film adaptation of Julie Jensen's award-winning play, the location is moved from a Mormon community in Utah to one in rural Appalachia. It's 1958 and Darla (Guin Turner in another wonderful performance) realizes that she is pregnant for the umpteenth time. She also believes that her unborn child is a girl and as such may not have long to live. Darla has two sons, the overly religious J. Fred and the rambunctious Reese. Darla also has an alcoholic and abusive husband named Meyers (Bill Sage). Meyers can never keep a job for long and so his kind-of-butch sister Jolene (Dot-Marie Jones) is the one who makes sure that Darla and her boys have food to eat. Jolene also has an unrequited love for Darla, though Darla seems completely oblivious about it, or is she? On one late summer's day, everyone's world in that household will came crashing down and no one will ever be the same afterwards. This might be the most harrowing twenty-four hour period that you will ever see.

This is independent film at it's best. If you are a Guin Turner fan, you have a chance to see he in a great dramatic role that really shows the range that she has. Stray Dogs is a character-driven actor's showcase, juxtaposing elements of suspense, revelation and violence with everyday life in a compelling family drama.

LAN YU
Sunday, June 23 " 7:00pm
Monday, June 24 " 5:30pm

Director Stanley Kwan has crafted an uncommonly affecting love story between two men, adapted from the wildly popular underground novel, "Beijing Story", by the anonymous author, Beijing Comrade. The film begins in 1988 as Lan Yu, a young country boy newly arrived in Beijing to study architecture, meets Chen Handong, the successful head of a fast-growing trading company who prefers men to women. In need of cash, Lan Yu contemplates prostituting himself to a third man, but Handong takes him home instead, intending to initiate a purely sexual relationship. Handong doesnt want a longterm companion, and tells Lan Yu that their time together will be limited. Undeterred, Lan Yu falls in love. The older man eventually seems to warm to the idea of a lasting relationship, but his compulsive infidelity and desire for an eventual heterosexual union put obstacles in their path. Kwan tells the deceptively simple story of their relationship against the backdrop of a country in political turmoil. One especially poignant scene takes place on the night of June 4, 1989, as Handong searches for Lan Yu while the army sweeps into Tiananmen Square. But while informed by such developments,
Lan Yus story remains essentially rooted in the deeply felt relationship between two men recognizing and confronting love.

ESCAPE TO LIFE:
THE KLAUS AND ERICA MANN STORY

Tuesday, June 25 " 5:30pm
Escape to Life is an enthralling documentary about Klaus and Erika Mann, the talented, gay, eldest children of Nobel prize winning novelist Thomas Mann. Erika (who eventually wed W. H. Auden for British citizenship) was an outspoken playwright, journalist and lecturer who often pretended to be a twin of her sensitive brother, whose novel Mephisto was adapted to film. Klaus and Erika were authors, cabaret performers, and committed anti-fascists. Their intense sibling relationship which took root through the imaginative, make-believe world they shared as children, (think Billy & Brenda from SIX FEET UNDER) was strained by the demands of life in exile, by Klaus' drug addiction and Erika's gradual shift in loyalty from brother to father, with fatal consequences. Bringing together rare archival footage and period music, revealing anecdotes from colleagues and friends, TV interviews with Erika Mann, and re-created scenes based on Klaus Mann's writings, Escape to Life is a fascinating tribute to a extraordinary couple. Featuring Vanessa and Corin Redgrave as the voices of Erika and Klaus Mann.

LAWLESS HEART
Wednesday, June 26 " 7:30pm

Stellar acting, insightful direction, deft editing and wonderful writing distinguish The Lawless Heart , the latest feature from Neil Hunter and Tom Hunsinger (the filmmaking duo behind Boyfriends). Set in a rural village on the salt marshes of Englands Essex coast, this sweet, funny and engaging film expertly evokes the sort of small town where past lovers and future friends collide, and everyone else knows your business as soon as you do. Using an overlapping storytelling technique that might have failed in less nimble hands, Hunter and Hunsinger draw us slowly into their characters lives and unfold the towns mysteries and the residents motives with truly filmic panache. By starting each new segment of the film at the same moment in timethe funeral of Stuart, a drowned restaurateurthe filmmakers keep us guessing about whos who, what theyre up to and what will happen next. As the dead mans bereaved boyfriend, feckless brother-in-law, well-meaning sister and long-lost cousin all struggle to cope with their loss and find meaning in their own lives, each makes fateful choices that have profound, and often very amusing, results. Standouts in a great cast include Tom Hollander (GOSFORD PARK, BEDROOMS AND HALLWAYS) as the boyfriend, Douglas Henshall as the cousin, Ellie Haddington as the sister and Sukie Smith as a wacky check-out girl named Charlie who parties a little too hard and ends up in the wrong bed.

PINERO
Thursday, June 27 " 7:45pm
Saturday, June 29 " 2:00pm

In a career-making performance, Benjamin Bratt inhabits the title role with mesmerizing fury. Driven by beatnik sensibilities, Latino rhythms and junkie reverie, poet/playwright/actor Miguel Pinero was only 40 when he died in 1988, leaving behind an impassioned body of work. Pinero's internal muse drinks from a bottomless well of anger and pain, periodically relieved by his wry sense of humor. Born in Puerto Rico, he's raised by a single mother (Rita Moreno) in New York, where the streets claim him at an early age through crime and same-sex-for-sale. Heroin takes hold of him in jail, where he also discovers his considerable talent for the written and spoken word. Although penned with intriguing dialogue, the script's non-linear structure is almost hallucinogenic. Constantly alternating black-and-white cinematography with color, the film visits Pinero in Sing Sing, then reciting poetry at the Nuyorican Cafe he co-founded in lower Manhattan. Pinero betrays those who nurtured him. His relationship with Public Theater impresario Joseph Papp (Mandy Patinkin) is particularly volatile in this harrowing portrait of a complex bisexual artist.

SECOND SKIN
Saturday, June 29 " 7:00pm
Sunday, June 30 " 9:00pm

Spanish actor Javier Bardem was a smoldering, intense presence in Before Night Falls, for which he received an Oscar nomination. In this sultry Spanish drama, he's still smoldering but this time hes caught in the middle of a love triangle with a very-married man. Actually, the entire cast of Second Skin smolders. Jordi Moll, who is lens-meltingly handsome, plays Alberto, a tortured young husband who embarks on the affair with a handsome surgeon (Bardem). Adriana Gil, an Audrey Hepburn-esque beauty with big, sad eyes, plays his wife, Elena. Latin passion abounds.

KE KULANA HE MAHU
Sunday, June 30 " 4:30pm

Fascinating personal interviews and outstanding historical research make this a groundbreaking analysis of the relationship between queer struggles and the struggles of the Kanaka Maoli, Hawaiis indigenous people. The documentary examines how Western colonization and modernization gave rise to intolerance and homophobia in Hawaii and how efforts are being made by the current generation to restore their culture and recognize the once-cherished role of gay and transgender people in Hawaiian society. More than a century of imposed Christian sexual repression almost destroyed the ancient traditions of unconditional love, community solidarity and acceptance of the transgendered Mahu, sacred healers in indigenous society. (Mahu literally means both male and female.). This phenomenal documentary is a response to the hate and fear generated by the mainland Religious Right in its campaign to prevent Hawaii from legalizing gay marriage. The film also demonstrates how Hawaiis embrace of LGBT civil rights is firmly based in the states struggle against political and cultural imperialism.

The KC Gay Film Fest brought you the original "Queer as Folk" in the 2000 Festival. We're thrilled to able to bring you Russell T. Davies (QAF's creator) brilliant new series, Bob & Rose. And yes, it's destined to create every bit as much controversy and excitement as QAF. Also set in Manchester, Bob & Rose expands the view of the city made famous in QAF. We see Canal Street and the Babylon again, but we're also introduced to Deansgate, where 30-year old Rose hangs out with her best mates. Rose is funny, sassy, down-to-earth, and, well, a bit bored with her life. Then she meets Bob! Bob is in his early thirties, a teacher, and a gay man with an overly-supportive mum. Having recently ended a relationship, he seems uneasy being single again. He certainly isn't expecting to meet someone like Rose! Meeting by chance, they are both surprised by how fast they click. They can't deny that something more than friendship is developing. Can they really be falling in love -- a gay man and a straight woman? How will Bob's proud PFLAG mother react to her son bringing home a woman? What will Holly, Bob's scarily off-kilter best friend, do about Bob choosing another woman over her? How do Bob & Rose themselves deal with the doubts and questions their relationship cause? Follow their story over the course of six absolutely delightful episodes.

SORDID LIVES
Wednesday, July 3 " 8:00pm

Check out this cast: Bonnie Bedelia, Delta Burke, Beau Bridges, and Olivia Newton-John. (Can you see why this has become a record breaking cult hit in certain gay meccas?) Sordid Lives is the kind of post-modern fable born out of Shakespeare and Springer. Based on the critically acclaimed play by Del Shores (who wrote and directed the film), he puts a comedic twist on a torrid tale about unconditional love, acceptance and ''coming out'' in a Texas family. Peggy, the family matriarch, dies in a freak accident involving some wooden legs, a seedy hotel room, and an illicit affair with G.W. (Beau Bridges), a married man.

The colorful cast of characters converge in preparation for her funeral, and like an elaborate flow chart with the late Peggy as the center of the universe, everyone is either related, or has got some sordid connection to her. La Vonda and Latrelle (Ann Walker and Bonnie Bedelia), are her feuding daughters, who've got problems of their own, aside from fighting over their dead mama's wardrobe (a mink coat with the head still on it?). La Vonda wants to spring her brother out of a mental institution, where he's been staying for the past 20 years, because he's lived his life dressed like Tammy Wynette. Latrelle, on the other hand, is in total denial over her son's homosexuality. La Vonda is also best friends with Noletta (Delta Burke), the wife of Peggy's former lover.

Noletta is a woman scorned, and seeks revenge in the form of a Thelma & Louise plotline. Throw in the grieving sister of the dead matriarch and Aussie Olivia Newton-John as an ex-con turned barfly/singer named Bitsy Mae Harling, and we've got ourselves a trailer park Dallas! And this all happens before the impending funeral.

Proceeds from this screening benefit the Lesbian & Gay Community Center of Greater Kansas City!
